Most people are familiar with the fact that most couples who reach the point in an ART cycle when embryos are transferred to the uterus, will not achieve a pregnancy.

Even when presumably high-quality and fertile eggs are used, such as in egg donation, over half of couples are still left disappointed each cycle. Since most couples are able to get eggs and have fertilization, then the question is where does the failure occur? The answer may be in the implantation phase.

After a fertilized egg is transferred to the uterus, several things must happen :

  • It must continue to divide and grow (it is now called an embryo).
  • The embryo must break out of the zona pellucida (usually just called the zona) which is a hard protein shell that surrounds it.
  • The embryo must then burrow into the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) and continue to grow there.

It is the published opinion of some scientists that pregnancy may fail to occur in some cases because of the inability of the embryo to break out or “hatch” from the zona. According to the theory, there are some women who are more prone this to happen.

These include women who :

  • Are over 40 years old
  • Have failed to implant in several IVF cycles
  • Have eggs with very thick zona when measured under the microscope
  • Have abnormal hormone profiles indicative of lower quality eggs (elevated FSH levels)

Logically then, if we could assist those embryos in the hatching process, it might be possible to increase the chance of implantation and hence the chance of successful pregnancy. And so assisted hatching (AZH) was invented.

There are many different methods of AZH available. At Global IVF & Fertility Center, we use a laser for AZH – Laser Assisted Hatching in Mumbai.

The Benefits of Laser-Assisted Hatching in Achieving Pregnancy

laser assisted hatching in indiaAchieving pregnancy depends on the successful implantation of a hatched embryo. However, in some cases, the outer layer of the embryo can become excessively hard due to various processes like thawing or freezing. A softer outer layer increases the chances of successful implantation in the uterus wall. To assist with hatching, Laser-Assisted Hatching is an innovative IVF technique that involves creating an opening in the outer membrane, known as the zona pellucida. This advanced procedure has helped many individuals achieve pregnancy. At Global IVF Fertility Center in Mumbai, India, we offer laser-assisted hatching as part of our commitment to providing the best possible infertility treatments and helping couples start their families.

The treatment process for laser-assisted hatching

Under a microscope, an embryologist directs a short but powerful laser beam to create an opening in the outer layer of the embryo. This opening allows the embryo to implant in the inner wall of the uterus. At Global IVF Fertility Center in Mumbai India, laser treatment begins three days after fertilization, following the IVF process or ICSI cycle. Within a few seconds, the laser assisted hatching in India process is completed without harming the embryo. After the procedure, the embryo is transferred back to the patient’s uterus, where it can resume normal growth and attach itself to the lining. With immense success rates, laser-assisted hatching is a simple yet effective treatment for infertility.
